【By Liu Rui, Zhang Yuanmiao (Intern)】The "Changying-8" (also known as NORINCO LUCA), a world's largest cargo transport drone independently developed by Beijing Beifang Changying UAV Technology Co., Ltd., successfully completed its maiden flight on Tuesday at an airport in Zhengzhou, central China's Henan province.
The fixed-wing drone took off smoothly after accelerating along the runway for just 280 meters. During the roughly 30-minute test flight, it performed precise maneuvers and landed stably. The flight successfully validated key systems, including flight control, avionics, electromechanical components and the power unit.
Geng Jianzhong, chief designer of the Changying-8, called the drone an "unmanned aerial heavy truck." It has a maximum payload capacity of 3.5 tonnes, which is enough to carry more than 1,700 winter coats or around 700 disaster relief tents in one trip. With a maximum range of over 3,000 kilometers, it could fly non-stop from Beijing to Urumqi, far exceeding the capabilities of most traditional cargo drones.
Geng highlighted the drone's impressive scale: it features a large airframe, high payload capacity, a spacious 18-cubic metre cargo hold, and strong adaptability. Beyond its size, the Changying-8 is equipped with an AI-powered "brain" that enables fully autonomous flight, automatic obstacle avoidance, real-time health monitoring of its systems, and self-diagnosis of faults , requiring very little human intervention.
Furthermore, the drone also supports quick modular changes. Its wings can carry a total payload of 3 tonnes, making it easy to reconfigure for different missions. The power system is designed for straightforward upgrades, facilitating multi-role operations.
A major milestone is the drone's 100% domestic supply chain. All components — from aviation materials and core parts to the Chinese-made turboprop engine, flight control system, and avionics — are developed and produced in China. This breakthrough breaks foreign technological monopolies and marks China's shift in the unmanned transportation industry from catching up to taking a global lead.
The versatile platform has wide-ranging applications. In operations, it can support feeder logistics, express delivery, and supply missions in border areas. In emergencies, it can support disaster relief, forest fire fighting, and disaster monitoring. IIt can also be deployed for communication relay, weather modification, and border patrol, serving both civilian and special mission needs.
This successful maiden flight provides strong support for China's growing low-altitude economy and improved emergency response capabilities, especially in complex terrains and long-distance transport scenarios.
