Lingnan University’s Jockey Club Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing in Place Project has received the highest 3-Star Certificate in the Elderly Care Award Scheme 2024-25 for the second consecutive year. Organised by the Co-ordinating Committee for Elderly Service of the Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing Districts Social Welfare Department, the 3-star rating represents the top award, acknowledging the project’s excellence in community outreach and elderly care innovation.

Over the past year, Lingnan’s project team has organised 23 activities in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing for more than 600 people aged 65 and over. These events included gerontechnology talks, smartphone workshops, and hands-on experience with smart products to encourage independent living and digital understanding in older adults.

Dr Chloe Sui Pui-yi, Senior Lecturer at the School of Graduate Studies and Institute of Policy Studies at Lingnan University, said “Lingnan University strives to be a leading liberal arts institution in the digital age, with a strong focus on our motto ‘Education for Service’. This award highlights our longstanding commitment to civic engagement through gerontechnology. Our project covers Hong Kong’s 18 districts and outlying islands. Looking ahead, we shall be training more Gerontech Ambassadors, and raising awareness among young people about the ageing population. Growing numbers of undergraduates are participating in gerontechnology courses and volunteer work, improving intergenerational empathy and social innovation.”

Dr Sui added “Due to Hong Kong’s ageing population, there is an urgent need to support the elderly and their caregivers at the grassroots level. We encourage care providers to collaborate with tertiary institutions to upgrade outreach services for the elderly. Caregivers face increasing pressure, and it is our hope that more neighbourhood-based mutual support networks can be developed to foster a caring, elder-friendly culture.”

The University’s Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Health and Social Services Management (JS7305) is one of the most sought after JUPAS programmes this year, with nearly 36 applicants competing for each place. The programme addresses healthcare and social services management, and prepares students for careers in NGOs, public service, corporate social responsibility, and policy research.
