The Lingnan University Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS) hosted an event for the Chinese Medicine Education in the Community Project on 23 May 2025 attended by 195 members of two elderly community centres in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long districts, Lingnan University students, and the public. The project had adopted an intergenerational co-learning model where, after training, the elderly and Lingnan University students worked together to provide treatment and health education in retirement homes in order to promote Chinese medicine, and also to encourage integration, understanding, and respect between the elderly and the young.
Prof Dickson Chan Chak-kwan, Director and Research Professor of Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies, delivered a welcome speech thanking the organising groups for promoting Chinese medicine in the community, and presented certificates of appreciation to Mr Andrew Lau, Administration Manager of the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association (HKTCHDA), and Mr Chung Wai-yeung, a registered Chinese medicine practitioner and the manager of the Lingnan University Chinese Medicine Clinic. Prof Chan and Mr Chung then awarded Chinese Medicine Community Promotion Service Certificates to the 35 Chinese Medicine Health Ambassadors in the project. An older person and a student also spoke on what the project had taught them about Chinese medicine and intergenerational harmony.
In the second part of the ceremony, Ms Tam Yi-shun, a registered Chinese medicine practitioner from the HKTCHDA, lectured on “Principles and Methods of Chinese Medicine in Regulating Intestinal Health”, “Diet and Medicated Diets to promote Intestinal Health”, and “The Application of Acupressure and Health Tea”. She also made practical suggestions concerning everyday life, and dietary precautions to improve digestive health. The seniors enjoyed her talk and asked questions afterwards, showing that the event had achieved its goal of recommending Chinese medicine.
This seminar is part of a project sponsored by the Chinese Medicine Development Fund, which aims to establish a community-based, multi-benefit platform by promoting knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine and culture and to teach the elderly how to maintain good health in their daily lives.
