Fujian Aircraft Carrier Commissioned: Navy Enters Three-Carrier Era

The commissioning and flag-presenting ceremony for China's first electromagnetic catapult aircraft carrier, the Fujian, was held earlier and received significant attention from the central leadership. The Fujian's entry into service marks a historic breakthrough in China's drive to build a world-class navy and is an important major milestone on the journey towards the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. It not only signifies that the Chinese Navy has officially entered the three-carrier era but also symbolises the leap in China's aircraft carrier programme from "none" to "strong", serving as a vivid demonstration of China's self-reliance in science and technology and its comprehensive national strength. It provides a solid guarantee for safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests.

The commissioning of the Fujian represents a generational leap in the history of China's aircraft carrier development, placing Chinese carriers among the world's most advanced. As one of the few carriers globally to employ electromagnetic catapult technology, the Fujian sets a worldwide precedent for a conventionally powered carrier equipped with an electromagnetic launch system. By abandoning the traditional steam catapult pathway and directly targeting the most cutting-edge technology, it demonstrates the depth and foresight of China's defence industry. The electromagnetic catapult system not only greatly enhances the take-off efficiency and sortie rate of carrier-based aircraft but also enables fighters to launch with full fuel and munitions, significantly extending combat radius and loiter time. Combined with new carrier-based aircraft such as the J-35 stealth fighter and the KJ-600 early airborne warning aircraft, the Fujian has formed a systematic and information-based combat capability.

The leap-forward achievements in China's carrier development stem fundamentally from reliance on independent design, research and development, and construction—a vivid example of "keeping core technologies in our own hands". From the introduction and refit of the Liaoning, to the independent construction of the Shandong, and now to the technological leap of the Fujian, every step in China's carrier development has been solid and powerful, fully demonstrating comprehensive breakthroughs in high-end equipment manufacturing, systems engineering integration, and the application of cutting-edge technologies.

With the Fujian's commissioning, the Chinese Navy has officially entered the three-carrier era, greatly expanding the depth of maritime defence and far-seas combat capability. Military experts point out that a three-carrier configuration can achieve a virtuous cycle of "one carrier on combat readiness, one in training, and one in maintenance", ensuring sustained combat capability at any time. When necessary, a three-carrier formation can generate powerful joint strike power, with operational effectiveness far beyond simple addition. At the strategic level, the Fujian's operational range can extend to the so-called "second island chain", significantly strengthening China's strategic presence and influence in the Western Pacific. This not only enhances the ability to safeguard national sovereignty and maritime rights and interests but also provides a solid guarantee for responding to complex international situations and deterring external interference. China has always adhered to the path of peaceful development; the development of aircraft carriers is not for an arms race but to defend national unity, territorial integrity, and development interests— an essential responsibility of a major power.

The rapid commissioning of the Fujian—from launch to service in just three years, with sea trials and the formation of initial combat capability progressing ahead of schedule—fully reflects the all-round, efficient, and coordinated development of China's large warship construction, organisational management, and talent cultivation. The ability to advance the Fujian's construction at "Chinese speed" is due to the powerful support formed by the synergy of the national industrial system, scientific and technological research and development, and talent teams. This not only reflects the maturity of China's shipbuilding industry and naval construction but also accumulates valuable experience for the research, development, and construction of subsequent, more advanced carriers.

The commissioning of the Fujian is not an endpoint but the starting point of a new journey. From "zero breakthrough" to "three carriers in service", from "learning and emulating" to "leading innovation", the development trajectory of China's aircraft carriers is a microcosm of the nation's comprehensive strength moving from catching up to running alongside, and then to leading. TheFujian's entry into service is not only a military achievement but also a manifestation of national confidence—a vivid portrayal of the Chinese people's unity, self-reliance, and determination to reach new heights.
